How our figures are sourced and dated

Every figure on this site comes from a named source, and each page lists its sources with the date we checked them. Some examples from our guides:

• System cost: the Energy Saving Trust gives about £7,600 for a typical 4.5kWp home system (fuel prices July 2026), and Checkatrade's June 2026 guide puts a 4kW system at about £8,000.
• Electricity prices: the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p/kWh (Direct Debit, 1 Oct to 31 Dec 2026).
• Export payments: around 12p/kWh, the typical Smart Export Guarantee rate quoted by the Energy Saving Trust. Rates vary by supplier.
• Generation: PVGIS 5.3 for Telford, run on 25 Oct 2026, gives about 971 kWh a year per kWp for an unshaded south-facing roof.
• VAT: solar panels and batteries for homes are zero-rated until 31 March 2027 under HMRC Notice 708/6.
