The Energy Saving Trust says a typical home system of around 4.5kWp costs around £7,600 to install. Checkatrade's guide (updated June 2026) gives these ballpark averages:
| System | Typical home | Ballpark cost |
|---|---|---|
| 3kW | Terraced | around £6,000 |
| 4kW | Semi-detached / 2–3 bed | around £8,000 |
| 5kW | Small detached | around £9,000 |
| 6kW | Large detached / 4+ bed | around £10,000 |
So most homes are typically from about £6,000 to £10,000 for panels alone. Adding a battery usually adds several thousand pounds more (see battery storage). Installations on homes currently have 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
It depends on how much of the electricity you use yourself, your tariff and your export payments. The Energy Saving Trust's own examples (fuel prices as of July 2026, with export payments) range from about 9 to 12 years across UK locations; its Manchester example, the nearest of its locations to Shropshire, is 10–11 years. Treat these as illustrations, not a promise for your home.
The Energy Saving Trust says panels should last 25 years or more, but the inverter usually needs replacing after around 12 years. Maintenance is light: rain cleans panels tilted at 15° or more.
